Why I Plan Travel Photoshoots in Advance

Travel

Senior year is a once-in-a-lifetime milestone, and it deserves to be celebrated in an unforgettable way. For many seniors, that means going beyond their hometown with a travel photoshoot—exploring a dream destination with their family before heading off to college, a career, or wherever life is leading.

A travel session isn’t just about gorgeous photos; it’s about creating memories you’ll treasure forever. These sessions offer the chance to experience new places, soak in different cultures, and celebrate senior year with an adventure. But because of all the moving parts, they require thoughtful planning—so let’s talk about why booking in advance matters and what you’ll want to consider.

Why Planning Travel Photoshoots in Advance Matters

This year, I am only taking on 25 senior sessions—and with a full family schedule (I’m a mom of seven!), my travel availability is even more limited. That’s why planning ahead is key. I recommend reaching out about travel sessions at least 6 months in advance—at minimum, 3 months depending on my schedule—so there’s plenty of time to get everything in place.

Travel sessions involve more moving parts than a local shoot. We need to make sure lodging, flights, and car rentals are available. I also need time to scout locations and build an itinerary so that when we arrive, we can make the absolute most of the destination. The extra time allows me to do all the behind-the-scenes work that ensures you get the session of your dreams while also enjoying a location you love.

Planning in advance also takes away the stress. Anyone who’s ever organized a vacation knows it’s not a simple feat. Early planning means no last-minute scrambling for hotels, flights, or road trip details—and it gives me time to help with timeline guidance. This is one of my favorite parts of the process, because I love making sure my clients have an amazing, memorable experience!

FAQs

How far in advance should I book a destination photoshoot?

The earlier the better—6 to 12 months ahead is ideal, especially for popular destinations or peak senior photo season.

Where can we travel for a senior session?

Anywhere that speaks to your personality! Some seniors stick to regional gems here in North Dakota, while others meet me in destination spots like Arizona, the beaches of South Carolina, or a favorite city.

How do I choose the best photography destinations?

Think about what fits your style: do you want urban vibes, beachy sunsets, or wide-open landscapes? I’ll share location guides and ideas to help you narrow it down. I have an entire blog that goes into more detail!

Choosing the Destination

What should I pack for a destination photoshoot?

Bring multiple outfits that reflect your personality and fit the vibe of the location. Don’t forget comfy shoes, layers, and small essentials like water or touch-up makeup.

Who handles travel arrangements?

You’re responsible for your personal travel (flights, hotels, transportation), while I handle my own. We’ll coordinate schedules so everything lines up seamlessly.

What happens if the weather changes?

Part of traveling means rolling with the elements! I always have a backup plan and know how to work with different lighting or weather conditions to still get beautiful images.

How many outfits can I bring?

Most seniors bring 2–4 outfits for a travel session, but it depends on your specific package.
