More Tips for Your North Dakota Senior Photos

Uncategorized

Over the years, I’ve shared tons of resources and blogs about senior sessions—covering everything from what to wear to the best local locations. But lately, I’ve been focusing on some of the less glamorous, yet equally important, tips. You know, the things no one really thinks about… but that can seriously make or break your experience. In this post, I’m sharing some of the most overlooked details that I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way!) can make a huge difference in helping your session go smoothly and keeping you comfortable and confident in front of the camera.

Tip #1: Bring the Right Shoes

If you follow me on Instagram, you probably saw the reel I posted recently about senior session footwear. Believe it or not, flip-flops and sandals are actually the number one shoe I recommend for your session. Now, I know what you’re thinking—this probably sounds surprising when I’ve shared so much about choosing a polished, cohesive wardrobe for your shoot. But hear me out: flip-flops aren’t for your actual photos. They’re for getting to your photo spots.

Especially if we’re heading to a rocky location, walking through fields, or doing any barefoot water shots, you’ll want something easy to slip on and off. While heels and dress shoes look amazing in photos, they aren’t exactly practical for hiking through uneven ground or navigating wet areas. Flip-flops, Birkenstocks, or even slides fit easily into your bag and help you stay comfortable between photo spots—no twisted ankles or ruined dress shoes required.

Tip #2: Bring a Towel

Now, you might be thinking, “Kellie, why in the world would I need a towel for my senior session?”

And honestly, it’s a fair question. But just like bringing flip-flops, it’s one of those small things that can make a big difference—especially if we’re shooting at a water location.

I love incorporating movement and water into my sessions. Some of the most beautiful, natural shots happen when you’re wading through the water, splashing a little, or sitting along the shoreline. But no one wants to stay soggy for the rest of their session (or sit in a wet car on the way home). Tossing a small towel in your bag makes it easy to dry off between locations, change outfits comfortably, or just avoid that damp, clingy feeling that nobody enjoys.

Tip #3: Pack Water & Snacks

Senior sessions can last up to two hours—sometimes longer if we’re hitting multiple locations. And if your session falls in the evening (which it often does to catch that golden light), it’s probably right around dinnertime. The last thing you want is to power through your photos while your stomach’s growling and your energy is tanking. Trust me, no one feels their best when they’re hangry.

So, do yourself a favor and pack a few easy snacks and a water bottle. Crackers, cookies, a protein bar, whatever you like to keep a growling belly away. Staying hydrated and fueled will help you stay comfortable, energized, and genuinely happy throughout your session. Plus, we’ll have more fun when you’re not counting down the minutes until dinner!

Tip #4: Things to Avoid Before Your Session

I get it—senior photos are a big deal, and you want to look your best. But sometimes, trying to “prep” last-minute can backfire. The biggest thing I recommend? Don’t lose sleep over your session. Get a good night’s rest beforehand so you show up feeling refreshed, confident, and ready to have fun.

And while we’re on the topic of prep, resist the urge to try something totally new right before your session, especially if it’s your first time. Spray tans can sometimes leave uneven tones or unexpected results on camera, and drastic hair changes (like cutting bangs, going a dramatically different color, or chopping off all your length) might not feel quite like you just yet.

Your senior photos should reflect your personal style and personality in this moment of your life. They’re a time capsule for you to look back on years from now—not a photoshoot full of regrets and “what was I thinking?!” vibes. Let’s keep them authentically you.
