Being a family photographer is so much more than just photos. I build relationships with my returning clients and have the privilege of being there to capture some of life’s milestone moments. Alyssa & Bradley are a great example of this. I announced a few weeks ago that I have my own natural light studio right here in Williston! This sweet couple was my very first session in the space and it was so fitting. After photographing their beautiful kids & engagement, it was such a sweet full circle moment to have them break in the space with a natural light studio family session, a milestone of my own!
My natural light studio relies on, you guessed it, the sun to light the photos, so we opted for a late morning session. The light pouring in from the windows is less harsh than traditional studio lighting. It gives the photos a much more natural, at home feel, perfect for a family session! With the space being all white, possibilities are endless for wardrobes without clashing & Alyssa did a great job selecting pieces for their session.
When photographing younger kids, I opt for an approach that lets them be little. In their beautiful dresses, this worked especially well for Alyssa & Bradley’s daughters. What’s the point in wearing a twirly dress if you can’t actually twirl in it? They had so much fun dancing and playing together in the studio, and we got authentic shots of sisters being sisters!
This family is lively and full of love for each other and it came across beautifully in their gallery. They spent the morning and early afternoon dancing, laughing, and enjoying their time together. This is again where lifestyle photography shines! I like to be a fly on the wall during sessions, prompting when necessary but mostly capturing families and couples in their natural element.
Given their recent engagement, I wanted to be sure and include some photos of the happy couple. I love the afternoon light in the shots of just the two of them! The shadows cast through the windows added such an intimate, romantic feel to the photo of Alyssa & Bradley embracing.
I couldn’t have asked for a better first session in my new studio and I’m eager to photograph more in the new year! This natural light space means more opportunities for my North Dakota business owners and entrepreneurs for headshots and branding sessions. It also means studio sessions for seniors as well as expectant mamas and their newborns!
