A Travel Photographer’s Guide to A Cape Coral Florida Vacation

Travel

If you live in North Dakota (or anywhere far north in the US), you know that winter can feel endless. That’s exactly why my family and I pack our bags and head to Cape Coral, Florida, as often as possible. It’s become our happy place, and a warm escape from frigid temps, frozen driveways, and snow boots. Instead, we get sunshine, palm trees, and long days by the water.

Over the years, Cape Coral has become more than just a vacation spot for us. It’s where we recharge as a family, soak up the Florida lifestyle, and create memories I’ll treasure forever. And now, it’s also one of my favorite destinations to photograph seniors, families, and couples who want something more than the “typical” session backdrop.

Because let’s be honest: sunsets on the Gulf Coast hit differently.

Favorite Cape Coral FL Restaurants

Cape Coral is filled with local gems where you can grab fresh seafood, tropical drinks, and waterfront views. Here a are a few you want to make sure to visit while you’re in the area:

Ford’s Garage Restaurant

Ford’s Garage is a fun, casual spot with great food and a lively atmosphere. You can find delicious burgers and a huge selection of beer amongst vintage service station vibes!

The Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill

With two locations, Cape Coral & Ft. Myers, The Boathouse is a go-to for laid-back waterfront dining. Their menu boasts fresh seafood (including fish tacos), burgers & chicken for those who don’t do fish, and signature drink buckets.

Rumrunners at Cape Harbour

Known for its seafood and cocktails with a perfect marina view, Rumrunners is a favorite for a reason. They also offer live entertainment 7-days a week!

Gramma Dot’s (Sanibel Marina)

This local favorite is known for  its fresh seafood and island charm. As Sanibel’s only dockside restaurant, it’s loved by locals & tourists alike.

Best Beaches Near Cape Coral FL

You really can’t go wrong with any of the beaches in this part of Florida, but these are the ones I’d recommend to clients (and to anyone visiting):

This is a lively beach with plenty of space for skim boarding, body boarding, and people-watching. Great for fun-loving couples and families!

Cape Coral Yacht Club

When it’s open, this beach is shallow, sandy, gradual, and family-friendly. It’s perfect for little ones who want to splash safely!

Best Locations for Cape Coral FL Photos

As a travel photographer, I can’t help but scout out the most beautiful backdrops. Here are some of my top picks:

Sanibel Island Beaches

Sanibel Island is a favorite of mine because of its golden light, seashells, and that dreamy Gulf backdrop.

Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge

This Sanibel refuge is perfect for nature lovers with trails, mangroves, and wildlife.

Fort Myers Beach Clock Tower

The clock tower, lovingly known as Times Square in Ft. Myers, is a  recognizable landmark that brings character to any session. Iconic and colorful, it makes a great backdrop for sessions of all sorts!

Edison & Ford Winter Estates

These Ft. Myers estates boast gorgeous historic homes and lush gardens, full of old-Florida charm.

What to Pack

Florida weather calls for packing light and smart. My quick tips:

  1. Bring a swimsuit (or two) because you’ll definitely spend time in the water.
  2. Expect it to be warm and humid, so keep your clothing light and breathable.
  3. A light jacket or sweatshirt comes in handy for evenings when the breeze picks up.
  4. Don’t forget a hat and sunscreen—the sun here doesn’t play around.

And lastly? Pack half as much as you think you’ll need. You’ll thank me later.
