This Bowditch Point Florida travel family session with April and her girls mattered for reasons bigger than portraits. April helped us buy our Cape Coral home, so this session became my thank you to the woman who helped plant our family here. What began as a last minute location pivot turned into an evening full of movement, connection, and one of the prettiest riverside sunsets I have seen at Bowditch Point.

We originally planned this session for Bunche Beach, but once we realized it was closed, we shifted to Bowditch Point in Fort Myers Beach. In hindsight, it gave us everything we needed.
Because Bowditch Point sits where the river meets the ocean, it gave us layered options that worked beautifully for a sunny Sunday evening. We had foliage and earthy paths that helped soften the harsh light early on. Then as sunset moved in, both the ocean side and the riverside started glowing.

April wore a flowing white dress and brought the hat she always brings to her photo sessions, which instantly made the session feel like her. Laney, 14, wore a strapless dress with the sweetest bow and a long train that moved so well in the breeze. Reese, 12, kept things playful and relaxed in jean shorts and a denim top, which fit her energy perfectly.
That contrast in wardrobe made movement the heartbeat of this Bowditch Point Florida travel family session. Every turn, walk, and lean into mom created a different kind of connection.

What I loved most about this evening was how naturally these three moved together. Nothing felt forced.
Laney had this graceful confidence that made her long train such a fun storytelling detail. Reese brought a playful spark that balanced the whole session. April stayed right in the middle of it all, steady and warm, letting the girls simply be themselves.
We built the session around motion. Walking through the foliage paths. Turning toward the river. Letting Laney’s dress catch the breeze. Pulling Reese in close for quick laughs. Those in between transitions created the moments that felt most true to them.
Because this was a gift session, there was already so much trust and history layered into it. She was our real estate agent when we bought our Cape Coral house, and photographing her family in a place tied so closely to Southwest Florida life made the whole experience feel personal.

If you are planning your own Bowditch Point Florida travel family session, this is the question I now answer differently.
I went in thinking the ocean side would be the obvious choice because sunset falls to the west. But the real surprise was the riverside on the east.
The sky there ended up being just as colorful, if not even prettier, than the ocean side. The softer water reflections gave us incredible color, and in retrospect, we easily could have stayed there through the final light.
There were also oats along that side, which would have added even more texture and movement at sunset. I am already thinking about how beautiful that would be for future sessions when I am back in Fort Myers Beach.
That local hindsight is exactly why I love travel family sessions. Every visit teaches me something new about how a place really photographs.

The one thing I would plan differently next time is parking.
There is parking available near the beach access, but there is not much of it, and it is paid parking. We tried driving through a couple times hoping to catch an open spot, but no luck.
Eventually April dropped me and my mom off so we could start the session while she drove farther down to park and then took the girls onto the beach area before meeting back up with us.
That flexibility saved the session.
The bigger surprise came afterward. Leaving took nearly an hour because traffic backed up in a huge line, and then we still had the bridge crossing ahead. For a Sunday sunset session at Bowditch Point, I would absolutely recommend planning extra time both before and after.
That said, the slower exit almost matched the pace of the evening itself. It gave everyone a chance to hold onto the feeling a little longer.

Flowing pieces, soft neutrals, and one playful contrast worked perfectly here. April’s white dress kept things timeless, Laney’s bow dress added elegance and movement, and Reese’s denim look made everything feel relaxed and real.

Yes, especially because the foliage paths and earthy pockets give you shade and texture before sunset. It is one of my favorite Fort Myers Beach backups when open sand is too bright.

Absolutely, especially for families visiting Southwest Florida who want both beach and river looks in one location. The variety makes it ideal for connection driven storytelling.
