Four Tips for a Smooth Mini Session

Tips and Advice

I’m eager to christen my new studio with mini sessions in just a few short weeks!  I have so many fun ideas planned and can’t wait to incorporate them into even more sessions in the new year.  Whether you’re a couple, best friends, a large family, or parents to littles, a little planning and a few pointers can go a long way to make your mini session experience smooth. Here are four tips for a smooth mini session.

1.Try on your outfits in advance

Have you ever picked something up in a store and imagined it looking phenomenal in your head only to try it on at home to realize it was much better in thought than actual execution?  That’s what we don’t want the day of your session!  Make sure that you put together outfits including shoes & accessories. Have everyone try them on at least a few days before your scheduled session to allow a little time for changes if need be.  If you’re looking for new pieces to wear in your session, check out Grace & Glam Boutique.  My new studio is in the same building and she’s got a great selection of pieces that would be perfect for photos!

2. Embrace the season

I did an extended family session a few months ago during which one of the little boys was dressed as a superhero.  Those were some of the most endearing photos from the session!  If your little ones have a comfort item or they’re in the middle of a Spiderman or Frozen obsession, it’s totally okay to embrace it.  Imagine when they’re grown and you’re all looking back through family photos saying, “Oh, I remember that teddy bear!  You took it with you everywhere you went!” If bringing a toy along for photos helps you keep your sanity and makes kiddos more cooperative, why not?

3. Get plenty of rest

Not only will sleep make you look more lively in photos, a little rest goes a long way for grown ups and kids alike.  No one wants a camera in their face if you’re tired & grumpy, and a short nap or a good night’s sleep can work wonders for everyone putting their best face forward.  If you’re bringing your children along, try to select a time slot that works around nap schedules if that still applies.

4. Leave Early

Especially this time of year, you never know what weather we’ll be working with here in Williston.  Be sure to leave your house in plenty of time to accommodate traffic and potentially inclement weather (like we’re having this week!)  Mini sessions are shorter than a typical session and I move quickly from one session to the next.  Time limitations aside, allowing plenty of time to get from point a to point b will make for less stress and a better experience all around!

The sessions I posted about recently are filling up quickly, but there are still a few openings up for grabs!  If you’re interested in snagging one for yourself, you can contact me here. (or send me a DM on Instagram or Facebook, whichever is easiest for you).  I’m so looking forward to photographing families and couples in my new space. I cannot wait for November to get here!  Looking for more inspiration?  Be sure to follow me on Pinterest for more tips and outfit inspo for your session!
