Last night was one for the books. We just wrapped up Hunter Hart’s North Unit senior session, and it was everything you could hope for—stunning senior portraits, dreamy golden hour light, and even a buffalo sighting. Here’s a peek behind the scenes of how this incredible North Dakota senior photography session unfolded.
We kicked things off at the cannonball spot right after meeting up at the North Unit park entrance around 7:15. Hunter stepped out in a classic black button-up, black dress pants, and polished shoes. Talk about a statement look! The contrast of his outfit against the natural rock formations was spot on. We spent about 30 minutes getting those sharp, dressed-up shots before it was time for a quick outfit change.
For the next round, Hunter kept it cool and casual with green shorts and a white button-up. This outfit brought a laid-back vibe to his North Unit senior photography session, perfectly complementing the natural tones of the location.
Hunter changed into his running clothes, and we hit the trails—literally. I climbed up high for some overhead shots, and my mom stayed low for another angle. Hunter took off down the trail like a pro, making it so easy to capture his stride and determination. We got some amazing action shots that really showcase his energy and drive—it’s the kind of movement that tells a story in every frame.
Here’s where things got interesting. We were planning to move to another trail to catch Hunter running with some harsher sunlight, but when we got there… buffalo. A big one. Just hanging out, doing its thing, right where we needed to be. Not wanting to risk it (because no photo is worth getting chased by a buffalo), we pivoted and headed to the top of the North Unit instead.
When we got to the top, the light was just starting to turn that dreamy golden color. Hunter changed into khakis, and we spent 10–15 minutes grabbing some photos on the trail. The light was perfect—soft, warm, and glowing.
Then, for the final outfit, Hunter switched into jeans and cowboy boots. Classic. We finished the session with the last bit of golden light, capturing those moody sunset vibes. We even threw in some silhouettes of him running with the sunset in the background. The tall grass made it tricky to get a full-body silhouette, but the shots from the knees up should still look amazing.
By the time we wrapped up, the sun was long gone, and we were on the road home with full memory cards and so many great moments to look forward to. I can’t wait to dive into these photos and see how it all came together—especially those sunset shots.
